A GoFundMe campaign for Donald Johnson, an 81-year-old man from The Colony, a suburb of Dallas, Texas, has been shut down after the platform discovered what it called "factual misrepresentations." The campaign, which aimed to help Johnson pay for his wife Josephine's cancer treatment, had raised over $281,000 before being deactivated this week. A GoFundMe spokesperson said that the Trust & Safety team found information that directly violated the platform's Terms of Service, leading to the removal of the fundraiser and the refund of all donations. The campaign was started after Erin Howell, a local resident, saw Johnson struggling with heavy bags. She described watching him carry lost luggage up a steep flight of stairs and noted that he looked exhausted. After speaking with him, she learned that Johnson had been working as an independent contractor delivering lost luggage to people's homes for three years to help cover his wife's medical costs. Josephine Johnson has been battling cancer, and the couple has been together for 57 years. Howell said Johnson started the job because it was the "only job that will hire me," and the couple was overwhelmed by medical bills, treatments, prescription medications, and everyday living expenses. She emphasized that Johnson, at an age when he should be resting and spending time with his wife, was working to keep her alive and cared for. Howell started the GoFundMe campaign to help Johnson retire without having to give up on paying for his wife's cancer treatments. She stated that all of the money raised would go toward Josephine's medical bills, allowing Johnson to stop working and focus on caring for his wife. She added that Johnson was unlikely to ask for help, emphasizing his pride and selflessness. According to Dallas station Fox 4, the fundraiser had garnered over $281,000 in donations before it was deactivated. In an interview with Fox 4, Donald and Josephine Johnson expressed gratitude for the donations, with Donald stating he would be able to stop working. His wife added that some donors had prayed for them, which was a joyful feeling. It is not clear what specific "factual misrepresentations" were uncovered by GoFundMe. The company noted that its policies require authenticity and transparency for donors, which were not met in this case. Donors were protected under the GoFundMe Giving Guarantee, which ensures a full refund if something is not right.
