The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, are currently undergoing a review of the security measures funded by the public purse, now that they have returned to the United Kingdom. The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), which manages security for members of the royal family and high-profile individuals, is reassessing the level of police protection provided to the couple. This review comes after the couple, along with their children, have made the UK their full-time home, rather than just visiting as they did previously. This is the first time since 2020, when Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as working members of the royal family, that a risk assessment is being conducted specifically for Meghan. Earlier this year, Harry had requested a review of his security, but no decision has been made yet. According to The Telegraph, the chair of Ravec informed Harry last week that the committee has commissioned separate risk assessments for both him and Meghan, in light of their return to the UK. The committee has asked the couple to provide details about their daily routines, including their children’s school commute, to help shape the assessment. In 2021, Harry lost a legal battle against the Home Office when the automatic security funding for him and his family was removed after they stepped back from royal duties. In a witness statement, Harry stated that the UK is his home and that it is important for his children to feel safe and at home in the UK. He expressed concerns about the risks involved in being in the UK without adequate security, especially for his family. The couple officially returned to the UK on 26 August, and shortly after, a letter was issued on behalf of King Charles, confirming their status as non-working royals. The letter emphasized that the couple is now "akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests," and that any security needs should be handled by local police authorities. In a recent move, the Sussexes also decided to switch their children to a new school just two days after starting at their previous school. A family spokesperson told Hello! magazine that the change was made after discussions with their security team about the practical challenges of their current arrangements. The spokesperson added that the decision should not be seen as a reflection on the previous school or the care the children received there.
