A few weeks before the third Russia-Africa summit, scheduled to take place in Moscow on October 28 and 29, the Burkina Faso Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, stated that his country is ready for the upcoming meetings. On October 2, Traoré met with Igor Martynov, the ambassador of the Russian Federation, in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. During the meeting, the two officials discussed the growing cooperation between their countries and the potential for further development. Martynov noted that "our cooperation is developing in a very dynamic manner and is strengthening," adding that there are still many concrete projects to develop in their bilateral relations. The discussion also focused on the first session of the Intergovernmental Commission for cooperation between Burkina Faso and Russia. This commission is designed to help both countries identify areas for collaboration and make commitments aimed at strengthening their economic and commercial ties. The agreement to establish this commission was signed in February of last year during a meeting in Moscow. This body will serve as a key platform for advancing their partnership in various sectors. The upcoming Russia-Africa summit was another topic of discussion. Igor Martynov emphasized that the summit represents a significant challenge given the current changes in global geopolitics and the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and insecurity in the Sahel region. The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, had invited Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the leader of Burkina Faso, to attend the summit. Earlier this year, Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, had also invited leaders from the Sahel Alliance countries to participate in the Moscow meeting. Burkina Faso is eager to deepen its relationship with Russia. Traoré reaffirmed his country's positive assessment of the evolving relations with Russia and assured that Burkina Faso is prepared for the meetings in Moscow. These discussions are expected to help consolidate bilateral cooperation and enhance exchanges between Russia and the African continent. Over the past several months, Burkina Faso and Russia have expanded their cooperation in various areas, including energy, higher education, the fight against disinformation, and the use of artificial intelligence. Both countries are looking to build on these developments and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
