Astronauts eat sandwich in space

On 23 March 1965, during the Gemini 3 mission, astronauts Gus Grissom and John Young brought a deli snack into their spacecraft. The corned beef sandwich, purchased the previous day at a restaurant in Cocoa Beach, Florida, lacked any protective covering to prevent crumbs from floating in microgravity.

Floating crumbs cause a problem

About two hours after liftoff, Young secretly placed the sandwich inside his spacesuit and later revealed it to Grissom, who was surprised. After asking where the sandwich came from, Grissom took a bite. The rye bread crumbs immediately began to float around the cabin, creating a mess that forced the crew to put the sandwich away.

Gemini 3 mission overview

Gemini 3 was the first crewed two-person flight by NASA, launched on 23 March 1965 using a Titan II rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The mission lasted 4 hours and 52 minutes, during which the crew was meant to test the capsule's maneuvering thrusters for future space missions.

Incident captures public attention

Although the sandwich incident lasted only about ten seconds, it captured the public's imagination and caused irritation among government officials. The Gemini program was preparing for more ambitious missions, including those that would eventually lead to the Apollo lunar landings.
