Cristiano Ronaldo has urged football authorities to impose lifetime bans on fans who chanted the name of the late Diogo Jota during a match involving his international teammate Ruben Neves. Diogo Jota, a forward for Liverpool, died in a car crash in July of last year at the age of 28. He was a close friend of Neves, having played together for Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Portuguese national team. The incident occurred during a Saudi Pro League match between Al-Hilal, where Neves plays, and Al-Taawoun. Before the game, some fans repeatedly shouted "Jota" at Neves, a gesture that Ronaldo described as deeply disrespectful. In a social media post, Ronaldo, who also plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, said the league must act against such behavior. "This is no longer football, and there have to be limits," he wrote. "People who behave like this should never be allowed to enter a stadium again." Ruben Neves has since dedicated his number 21 shirt for Portugal to Diogo Jota in memory of his friend. He also has a tattoo on his calf showing himself and Jota embracing. Both players have shared the field for the national team, and the incident has brought back painful memories for Neves. In footage from the match, Neves was seen sarcastically applauding a section of fans off-camera before pointing to the sky and looking toward them. After the game, he told reporters: "I just hope they don't go to pray later after what they did." Diogo Jota died alongside his brother Andre Silva in the crash in the Spanish province of Zamora. He had made a significant impact at Liverpool, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances after joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. He also made his debut for the Portuguese national team in 2019, scoring 14 goals in 49 games. BBC Sport has reached out to both Liverpool and Wolves for their comments on the incident.
