A second judge has stepped aside from a lawsuit involving Steven Tyler, the lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith, who is accused of having an illegal sexual relationship with a woman when she was 16 and he was 25. Torrance Superior Court Judge Patricia A. Young announced on Tuesday that she was recusing herself from the case. A hearing to assign the lawsuit to a new judge is scheduled for Friday before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lawrence P. Riff. Young’s clerk issued a minute order that did not explain her decision. Young was assigned the case last fall after Inglewood Superior Court Judge Tamara Hall disqualified herself just a day before a scheduled hearing on Tyler’s attempt to dismiss parts of the lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed against Tyler in December 2022 by a woman who claims the singer convinced her mother to give him legal guardianship when she was 16, allowing her to live with him while the pair had a sexual relationship. She alleges the relationship began in 1973 and continued for about three years. According to the lawsuit, the woman became pregnant in 1975, which would place Tyler as both the alleged father of her unborn child and her legal guardian. She claims Tyler pressured her into having an abortion despite her Catholic faith. She later described making a "conscious decision to leave and escape the music and drug-addled world," seeking freedom from what she called the sexualized culture around Tyler and the music industry.
Tyler’s legal team has challenged the lawsuit, arguing that most of the woman’s claims involve alleged conduct in Massachusetts, Oregon, and Washington, which would be barred by statutes of limitations in those states. They assert that only one claim has a sufficient connection to California. In recent pretrial filings, Tyler’s attorneys also asked the court to block two of the woman’s sons, Seth and Heath, from testifying at trial. They argue that the sons were not alive during the alleged abuse and thus have no firsthand knowledge of it. Additionally, they claim that any testimony about their mother’s character or emotional distress would be repetitive and potentially harmful, given the expected testimony from expert witnesses.
Steven Tyler, who is 78 years old, formed the band Aerosmith in Boston in 1970. The band has been a major force in rock music for decades, known for hits like "Sweet Emotion" and "I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing." This case has drawn significant public and legal attention, given Tyler’s prominence in the music industry and the serious nature of the allegations.
