Hearing loss prevalence in France

Nearly one in four adults in France experiences a measurable hearing loss, with only about one-third of those with disabling hearing loss using hearing aids. The high cost of these devices has long been a major barrier for many patients.

100 % Santé reform in audiology

The 100 % Santé reform, implemented between 2019 and 2021, aims to remove out-of-pocket costs for class 1 hearing aids, allowing all patients access to functional equipment. This reform is part of a broader effort to improve access to essential medical devices.

Reimbursement process and requirements

To receive reimbursement, patients must have a responsible complementary health insurance or the Complementary Health Solidarity. They also need a medical prescription from an ENT doctor or a general practitioner trained in otology and must select a class 1 device within a standardized price range.

Out-of-pocket payments and coverage

Although the reform covers the full cost of class 1 devices, an advance payment may still be required before reimbursement. This is based on a capped rate, with joint coverage provided by the French Social Security and the patient’s complementary health insurance.
