Mahershala Ali, an acclaimed actor known for his roles in films like Moonlight and Green Book, has publicly supported Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s view that the failure to produce a new Blade movie was one of the most significant missteps of Feige’s career. The Blade reboot was first announced at Comic-Con 2019, with Ali set to take over the role originally played by Wesley Snipes. Despite having a two-time Oscar winner under contract, Marvel was unable to bring the project to fruition, leaving Ali puzzled about the reasons behind the delays and eventual cancellation. Ali revealed that he invested a significant amount of time and effort into preparing for the role. This included a year of intense martial arts and sword training, as well as a move to Atlanta to be closer to the production. During this time, he also suffered a knee injury and had to uproot his family. Despite these efforts, Marvel kept delaying the project, which left him in a state of uncertainty for an extended period. The film faced numerous challenges throughout its development. It lost two directors—Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange—and was further impacted by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which caused widespread delays in the entertainment industry. Eventually, Marvel decided to remove the project from its schedule entirely, marking the end of the Blade reboot attempt. Ali has since expressed gratitude that the project did not move forward. He believes that the cancellation allowed him to focus on other opportunities, including starring in Tariq’s new film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which has been receiving widespread acclaim. This outcome, while initially disappointing, has ultimately led to new and successful creative ventures for the actor.
