Surfshark, a well-known provider of online privacy and security tools, has announced that it has acquired a majority stake in Optery, an American company that helps individuals remove their personal information from search engines and data brokers. This acquisition adds Optery to Surfshark's growing portfolio, which now includes five independent brands: Incogni, Ironwall, HeyPolo, and now Optery. Each of these brands continues to operate separately, maintaining their own teams, customer bases, and technical systems without combining their tools or data.
Optery, which was founded in the San Francisco Bay area and is registered in Delaware, specializes in helping users in the United States remove their personal data from data brokers—companies that collect and sell personal information. The company uses patented technology to identify personal profiles published on search engines, data broker websites, and people search sites. It then automatically sends deletion requests on behalf of users, using scripts to fill out forms and solve security challenges like CAPTCHA. When the process becomes complex, human agents step in to assist. Optery provides users with before-and-after screenshots to show the results of each data removal. The company claims to cover more than 950 websites and is certified under SOC 2 Type II, a standard for managing and protecting customer data.
This is the second acquisition for Surfshark, following its purchase of Ironwall in 2024, a service tailored for executives and public officials. Earlier this year, in March 2026, Surfshark also launched HeyPolo, a location-sharing app that gives users full control over how their location data is shared. Unlike HeyPolo, which focuses on limiting data sharing before it happens, Optery focuses on removing data that has already been collected and sold by data brokers.
Surfshark, which was founded in 2018, is popular among households with multiple devices due to its ability to support unlimited simultaneous connections. It offers apps compatible with major platforms and includes features designed for everyday use. The company continuously updates its infrastructure to ensure it remains a strong and reliable option for the general public looking to protect their online privacy.
