Global EV sales decline in September

After six months of growth, global electric vehicle sales dropped by 2% in September compared to the same period last year, ending a sustained upward trend. The decline was modest but significant, marking the first contraction in the six-month growth period.

Europe sets record despite global decline

Europe became the standout region, recording nearly 600,000 electric vehicle registrations in September. This was the best month ever for the region, surpassing the previous record by about 10%, despite the global decline.

North America sees sharp drop in sales

North America experienced a steep decline in electric vehicle sales, with a 44% drop compared to September 2025. This was attributed to a surge in purchases the previous year, driven by the end of federal tax credits, which created an artificial high in sales numbers.

China's market also slows down

China, the world’s largest electric vehicle market, saw an 18% decline in sales, totaling 1.11 million vehicles. This slowdown highlights the growing reliance of Chinese manufacturers on exports to sustain growth, as domestic demand weakens.

Market dynamics become more complex

The September data underscores the increasing complexity of the global electric vehicle market, where growth now depends on multiple regions with differing economic conditions and policies. While Europe’s strong performance is notable, it cannot fully offset the challenges faced in other key markets.
