World Cup-winning head coach Luis de la Fuente has signed a contract extension with the Spanish national team, securing his position until 2032. Previously, his contract was set to end in 2028. De la Fuente, who led Spain to their fourth European Championship title in 2024 and their second World Cup victory in July, will now remain in charge as Spain prepares to defend their World Cup title on home soil in 2030. The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with a few matches also taking place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as part of the tournament's 100th anniversary celebrations. Under De la Fuente’s leadership, Spain has maintained strong performance, losing only twice in 41 competitive matches since he took over in December 2022. During that time, the team won three major trophies, including the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League, and finished as runners-up in the 2024-25 Nations League. His tenure has also seen Spain claim two major international titles: the 2024 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup, where they defeated Argentina in extra time. RFEF president Rafael Louzan praised De la Fuente’s work and commitment during a speech at Wednesday’s World Football Summit in Madrid. He emphasized that the extension was offered not only for De la Fuente’s on-field success but also because he was not among the top 10 in terms of financial compensation. "The public loves and admires him," Louzan said. "We're finalizing the agreement so he can remain for several more years. He's been with us 14 years, and I want him to be able to finish his career here." De la Fuente’s career has been marked by success at both youth and senior levels. Before becoming Spain’s head coach, he spent nine years in Spain's youth setup, leading the team to a European Under-19 Championship in 2015, a European Under-21 Championship in 2019, and a silver medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. Spain's next match will be on 26 September, when they face England at Wembley in the opening game of the 2026-27 Nations League.
