Public concern for animal welfare

A large majority of French people consider animal protection an important cause, with this issue now a regular part of presidential election programs. However, Amandine Sanvisens, co-founder of the association Projet Animaux Zoopolis (PAZ), says that while citizens view it as a priority, it is not a central topic in political speeches.

Public opinion and expectations

An Ipsos survey commissioned by the Foundation for Animal Rights, Ethics and Sciences (LFDA) found that 86% of the French public regard animal protection as an important cause. This is especially true in rural areas and among young people, with pet ownership being common. Key measures requested include legal protections for wild animals, animal education in schools, and ensuring animals are stunned before slaughter.

Rise of the animal cause

The growing importance of animal rights in France began about ten years ago, influenced by shocking videos from the association L214 and the formation of the Animalist Party. This led to the 2021 law on animal cruelty and the inclusion of animal welfare officials in local elections. Associations are now actively engaging with presidential candidates through meetings, demonstrations, and the upcoming "Animaux 2027" campaign.

Political engagement and commitments

NGOs are urging candidates to sign the PAZ charter, which outlines 21 measures, including the strict enforcement of the 2021 law. Marine Tondelier, the first candidate to sign the LFDA's Animal Rights Pact, is highlighted as a leading figure in this effort. Despite this, Marine Le Pen, who leads in public opinion surveys, has not introduced animal-friendly legislation in her political group.

Diverse political positions

Political stances on animal welfare vary widely. While some candidates propose specific measures, such as creating a Ministry for Animal Welfare or regulating slaughterhouses, others have not taken significant steps. There is also a divide between political groups on issues like farming, with even members of the same party sometimes disagreeing.

Animal welfare in the broader context

The type of animal often influences political positions. While most politicians agree on protecting companion animals, there is a strong divide between left and right on farming issues. Réjane Sénac, author of Par effraction. Rendre visible la question animale, predicts that animal welfare will be addressed at least through the lens of ecology in this campaign. She notes that environmental concerns, including those related to farming, have become more urgent in daily life.
