XPENG, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has unveiled the L03, a new SUV coupé that highlights advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and custom computing power. Unlike most "intelligent" vehicles currently on the market, which typically offer less than 200 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of computing power, the L03 is equipped with three custom-designed Turing chips, each delivering 750 TOPS, for a total of 2,250 TOPS. This significant increase in computing power allows the vehicle to handle complex AI tasks more efficiently, enhancing both safety and convenience features. XPENG has taken a vertical integration approach, meaning it has designed its own hardware and developed its own algorithms instead of relying on third-party suppliers. The three Turing chips are dedicated to different functions: two are responsible for autonomous driving and active safety, managed by the VLA 2.0 system and VLMU, while the third powers the intelligent cockpit XOS 6. This system can run a large AI model with 30 billion parameters locally, without needing a constant internet connection. This separation ensures that safety-related calculations are not affected by comfort features and vice versa, improving overall performance and reliability. The L03 comes with 17 active safety functions as standard, which is more than what most competitors offer. Two standout features are "Custom Parking," which allows users to memorize and repeat specific parking maneuvers, and "Trace Reverse," which helps with autonomous reversing in tight spaces like dead ends. The Ultra version of the L03 includes an all-wheel drive system, a mid-range WLTP (World Light Vehicle Test Procedure) driving range, and ultra-fast charging to reduce the need for long stops on highways. XPENG plans to provide regular over-the-air (OTA) updates, allowing the vehicle to improve and evolve after purchase. To build trust with professional buyers and those unfamiliar with the brand, XPENG also offers a 7-year manufacturer warranty and roadside assistance. These measures aim to make the L03 a reliable and attractive option in the competitive electric vehicle market.
