Heavy torrential rains in the Hautes-Alpes region have caused significant damage to a local road, trapping nine vehicles in a parking lot at Pré de Madame-Carle, a high-altitude site in the commune of Vallouise-Pelvoux. The vehicles have been stuck since August 27 and 28, when extreme weather events led to severe flooding. According to Météo France Briançon, rainfall reached between 100 to 150 mm in the area, causing the road to collapse in several sections. As a result, the only access to the site is currently blocked, and the vehicles are expected to be evacuated by helicopter on Thursday, September 24, as announced by the prefecture of Hautes-Alpes. The affected vehicles belong to both mountain professionals and private individuals. However, standard methods of removing the vehicles have not been possible, as the vehicles themselves are undamaged and insurance companies do not cover the cost of their removal. Helicopter extraction is an expensive option, and the local authorities have decided to take responsibility for the operation. They argue that the partial collapse of the departmental road serves a public interest, justifying their involvement. To cover the costs, the president of the Department has proposed to fund two-thirds of the operation, amounting to 10,000 euros. The remaining 5,000 euros will be covered by the commune of Vallouise-Pelvoux. Additionally, the State has committed to compensating the commune for the expenses incurred. This decision highlights the local government's response to a situation caused by extreme weather, emphasizing collaboration between different levels of administration to resolve a unique and challenging problem.
