CODA director Sian Heder is returning with a new film titled Being Heumann, which chronicles the life of Judith Heumann, a prominent disability rights activist. The trailer for the Apple TV+ movie has been released, and the film is set to stream on November 13, following in the footsteps of Heder’s previous success with CODA, which won multiple Oscars in 2022. Apple TV+ is primarily known for its original series, such as Severance and Widow’s Bay, but has had fewer original films. CODA was a standout exception, winning Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. With Being Heumann, Heder aims to bring another powerful story to the forefront, focusing on the life of Judith Heumann, who has been a tireless advocate for the rights of disabled individuals and has worked to reduce discrimination against them. In the film, Ruth Madeley portrays Judith Heumann, while Mark Ruffalo plays Joseph Califano, a former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare under President Jimmy Carter. Califano was known for opposing some of the disability rights movement’s demands, creating tension in the narrative. One key event depicted in the movie is the 504 Sit-In, a historic 28-day protest led by Heumann and other disabled activists at the San Francisco Federal Building in 1977. This sit-in was a pivotal moment in the fight for disability rights and remains one of the longest sit-ins in U.S. history. The film features a strong supporting cast, including Dylan O'Brien, Will Brill, Michael Patrick Thornton, Antwan Tolliver, Rein Barcel, Charlie Rush-Reese, and Rob Delaney. Being Heumann will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before receiving a limited theatrical release on November 6. It will then be available on Apple TV+ on November 13, offering audiences a chance to watch the story of a groundbreaking activist on both the big screen and streaming platforms.
