After rain, objects left in the entrance of a home can increase humidity inside, creating conditions that may lead to dampness and mold. Items such as dripping umbrellas, soaked coats, and muddy boots bring moisture indoors. As the water evaporates, it can make the air feel heavy, cause fog on windows, and lead to the appearance of small black spots on walls — often a sign of mold growth. Managing these items properly is key to preventing the entrance area from becoming a humid, damp space. Umbrellas should be shaken outside to remove excess water and then left to dry slightly open in a bathroom or shower, where water can drain and ventilation is good. The tray in the umbrella holder should be emptied regularly to prevent water from pooling and keeping humidity levels high near the floor. Coats should be hung on hangers in a well-ventilated room, away from cold walls. Stacking multiple soaked coats on the same hanger can block airflow, making them dry more slowly and potentially leading to unpleasant odors. Soaked shoes should be wiped down and placed on an absorbent towel or rug in a well-ventilated area. They should be kept away from radiators, which can damage leather or loosen soles. Storing them immediately in a closed cabinet can trap humidity, leading to mold and musty smells. Entrance mats should be lifted after rain to prevent trapped moisture beneath them, which can cause staining or warping of the floor. Using an outdoor mat just outside the door can help retain some water and mud, while a thin indoor mat dries quickly and can be hung after a humid day. Bags and backpacks should be emptied, opened, and turned inside out if possible, then hung in a well-ventilated area. Leaving them against cold surfaces can cause condensation and poor drying. For schoolbags, notebooks should also be removed and dried flat. Strollers and bicycles should be wiped down before being brought inside, especially the wheels and canopy, to prevent water from pooling. Using an absorbent mat under the wheels can help, and if possible, these items should be dried in a garage, covered balcony, or other well-ventilated area.
