GMO AI & Robotics Corporation, a part of the larger Japanese technology firm GMO Internet Group, has introduced a new service designed to assist humanoid robots in case of malfunctions. This service includes a specialized ambulance that operates within Tokyo and is equipped with everything needed to rescue and repair humanoid robots on-site. The vehicle is staffed with engineers, diagnostic tools, repair equipment, spare parts, and even backup humanoid robots. It also features a stretcher for transporting faulty machines and storage for technical gear. The main goal is to address malfunctions immediately at the location rather than sending the robot to a repair center, which could leave it out of service for several days.
The service follows a multi-step process. First, technicians arrive at the scene to diagnose the issue. If the problem can be fixed right away, they perform the repair. If the malfunction is too complex, a backup humanoid robot is deployed to take over the damaged robot's tasks. This allows the damaged robot to be collected and sent for repair without disrupting the client’s operations. According to Shota Takizawa, the project designer at GMO AI, the ambulance brings a replacement humanoid to the site, ensuring continuous service.
The idea for this service came about due to challenges faced when sending malfunctioning robots to repair centers. Tomohiro Uchida, CEO of GMO AI & Robotics, explained that as humanoids become more common in daily operations, they will need to be repaired or replaced quickly when they break down. Currently, there are no fully autonomous robots capable of repairing other machines, so the ambulance remains a human-operated solution. Despite this, the service highlights a growing trend in providing emergency support for robots that work alongside humans.
This development reflects a broader shift in how society integrates robotics into everyday life. As humanoids take on more complex and varied roles, the need for efficient maintenance and support systems becomes increasingly important. The ambulance service from GMO AI & Robotics is one of the first examples of how emergency services are adapting to support robotic systems, ensuring they can continue to function reliably and without long interruptions.
