Foldable screen sales set for big jump

Sales of foldable smartphone screens are expected to rise by 44% in 2026, according to Omdia, a market research firm. This follows a 12% decline in sales in 2025, suggesting a strong recovery in the foldable phone market. The increase is projected to result in 29 million foldable screens being sold this year.

New designs drive growth

The rebound is largely driven by the popularity of two new models: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the newly released iPhone Duo. Both devices use a "wide" form of foldable screens, which are square-shaped and designed to offer more usable space when unfolded. This design is expected to account for 44% of foldable screen sales in 2026.

Form factor gains traction quickly

Despite being introduced only this year, the wide foldable screen has already become a major trend. Its adoption by the two most popular foldable smartphones on the market highlights its appeal to consumers. The design is seen as a practical alternative to traditional smartphones, offering a larger display in a compact form.

Samsung benefits from the trend

Samsung, a leading supplier of foldable screens, is set to benefit from the growth. The company provides screens for both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Duo, positioning it as a key player in the foldable smartphone market. However, demand for these devices remains low in China, even as consumer interest is growing. The reasons for this discrepancy are not yet clear.
