Jaclyn Smith, best known for her role as Kelly Garrett in the classic 1970s television series Charlie's Angels, has shared a surprising anecdote in her new memoir, I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie. Smith revealed that her former co-star Tanya Roberts—best known for playing Julie Rogers in the show's final season—and her husband, Barry Roberts, once asked her if she would be interested in participating in a three-way relationship with them. According to People magazine, Smith said the couple were in an open marriage and that Tanya was open about discussing or suggesting others join their lifestyle. Smith recalled being approached with the proposition during a flight to Hawaii for filming Charlie's Angels, but she declined. She praised Roberts for being "honest about her sexuality," calling it "brave and self-aware." Smith was part of the original cast of Charlie's Angels, which premiered in 1976, alongside Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. The show, which followed three female detectives, became a cultural phenomenon and remains a beloved part of television history. Smith recently spoke to People on the 50th anniversary of the series, reflecting on its enduring legacy. "People still send Charlie's Angels pictures for me to sign every day," she said. "Who would have dreamed the afterlife of Charlie's Angels would be like this?" In her memoir, Smith also provides a behind-the-scenes look at the show's production, including the prevalence of drug use on set. She wrote that cocaine became a regular presence as the series continued, leading her to spend more time in her motor home to avoid it. "The more drug use I saw, the more time I spent in my motor home," she wrote. "I was in there a lot by the end of the series." Smith said she vowed to never use cocaine after witnessing its effects on others. "I’ve watched that drug, in particular, turn people into the worst version of themselves," she said. Today, Charlie's Angels continues to be celebrated through reruns, DVDs, and a film series starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. Earlier this year, Smith reunited with Jackson and Cheryl Ladd at PaleyFest LA 2026, marking a rare gathering of the original cast. Farrah Fawcett, who played the iconic role of Sabrina Duncan, passed away in 2009. At the festival, Jackson credited the show’s success to the chemistry between the cast members. "It was unusual," she said. "The three of us had chemistry that was ... I mean, we’re still sisters today and you people are all so crazy that you’re still around after 50 years. I can’t believe it." She also expressed confidence in the show’s potential from the start, saying, "We started shooting the pilot, and I never doubted. I don’t know why, but I never doubted that it was going to be a big hit. It was unique."
