A community-developed mod has made it possible for NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 neural rendering technology to work on AMD Radeon RX 9000 and select RX 7000 graphics cards. This is a notable achievement, as DLSS 5 was originally designed to work only with NVIDIA’s own GPUs. The mod, known as DLSS-NR on AMD, leverages the FP8 (floating-point 8) calculation capabilities of modern AMD GPU architectures, including RDNA 4 and RDNA 3. These architectures allow for more efficient processing of complex calculations, which are essential for neural rendering technologies like DLSS 5. The mod has been tested in several games, including Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA V Enhanced, with visually impressive results. However, early performance on a Radeon RX 9070 XT in Cyberpunk 2077 was quite poor, dropping as low as 11 to 12 frames per second in 1080p resolution. Recent updates have improved this to around 30 frames per second, but this is still significantly lower than the performance seen on NVIDIA GPUs without the added computational load of DLSS 5. The project is still in development and has not been integrated into AMD’s official Adrenalin drivers. It is mainly used by mod enthusiasts and developers for experimentation, with some limitations, such as compatibility issues with DirectX 12 games using AMD’s FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology and potential anti-cheat systems that might block its use. The mod also shows that NVIDIA’s neural rendering technology can function on non-NVIDIA hardware, provided that the hardware has the necessary computational power. This suggests that the use of CUDA and Tensor cores, which are exclusive to NVIDIA, might not be absolute barriers for DLSS 5. Despite the progress made, the mod is still experimental and not yet a recommended solution for all AMD users. It highlights the potential for cross-platform compatibility in neural rendering but also underscores the challenges involved in adapting such advanced technologies to different hardware ecosystems.
