For its 20th anniversary, the Mrac Occitanie in Sérignan is hosting an exhibition titled Stop The Machine !, featuring 475 works by 264 artists. Spanning 3,200 square meters, the exhibition draws from the contemporary art collections of the Occitanie Region, including those of the Frac Occitanie Montpellier, the Abattoirs Museum - Frac Occitanie Toulouse, and the Mrac itself. The works range from 1968 to the present, offering a broad look at contemporary art in the region. The exhibition opens with a striking visual display in the entrance hall, where white and black bands run like a carpet through the atrium, while the beams above are painted in blue, yellow, red, and green. This space features Daniel Buren's De l'Horizontale à la Verticale, a site-specific installation created for the 20th anniversary of the Sérignan museum. Buren previously introduced color through the windows with his 2006 work Rotation, which has become a central theme in this exhibition. The Mrac was originally founded in 1991 as the "Espace d'art contemporain Gustave Fayet" and became a museum in 2006 under the leadership of then-mayor André Gélis. It was later designated a regional museum in 2010. For this anniversary exhibition, director Clément Nouet entrusted the curation to Fabrice Bousteau, editor-in-chief of Beaux Arts Magazine. Bousteau faced the challenge of selecting works from an ensemble of nearly 5,000 pieces. He initially used artificial intelligence to imagine concepts and layout ideas, though this sometimes resulted in "hallucinations, completely absurd things." Buren's Rotation serves as the guiding thread of the exhibition, symbolizing a vortex of colors, artistic movements, generations, and styles. The exhibition begins with blue, a nod to the nearby Mediterranean and a historically rare and precious pigment. In the corridor, nocturnal landscapes by Laurent Pernot and Gaël Bonnefon lead to the starry night of Alighiero Boetti's virgules, created with a ballpoint pen. The exhibition transitions to black and white, showcasing works like Ida Tursic & Wilfried Mille's Sainte-Victoire and Pierre Soulages' outrenoir. The exhibition features works that interact and contrast with each other. In the "Brut" section, colors become material, while in other areas, they represent movement or experience. Martin Creed's Half the Air in a Given Space invites visitors to navigate a room filled with acidic green balloons. The title Stop The Machine ! reflects ongoing debates about artificial intelligence in culture. It does not judge AI's role but highlights what the tool can produce and what it cannot replace. The exhibition runs from September 26, 2026, to March 7, 2027, at the Mrac Occitanie in Sérignan.
