Developer creates tool to simplify smart TV interfaces

A developer known as Gathin created an open-source project called CleanYour.tv after noticing ads on his parents' Xiaomi television before Netflix loaded. The project aims to simplify smart TV interfaces by disabling components related to advertising, recommendations, and tracking.

Project uses AI and Android tools

The CleanYour.tv project, released on October 17, uses artificial intelligence to simplify smart TV interfaces. It disables specific components without requiring users to root their devices or modify firmware, using debugging tools already built into Android.

Testing shows mixed results

On the Xiaomi television that inspired the project, Gathin claims to have disabled 25 software components and replaced the home screen with one inspired by Apple TV. While the usual apps remain accessible, they no longer have promotional content imposed by the manufacturer. Testing on a Philips TV also showed improvements but included crashes and issues with updates.

Installation requires technical steps

CleanYour.tv is not a simple app that can be installed with a few clicks. It requires users to activate development options on their TV, authorize debugging, and use an assistant to run commands. The AI helps automate technical steps already possible on Android, but the process is not beginner-friendly.

Risks and limitations

Disabling certain components can break other useful functions or prevent the TV from receiving security updates. Users are advised to understand what they are modifying. Removing ads from the home screen does not eliminate ads from YouTube or other streaming services. The project gives users more control over the interface but not over the services they use.

Growing frustration with smart TV ads

The initiative highlights a growing annoyance with advertising and data collection in smart TV interfaces. Technologies like ACR, which let some TVs analyze what's being watched, have raised privacy concerns. Users are increasingly seeking ways to reclaim control over their viewing experience.
