A European open-source office suite called Euro-Office is preparing to launch desktop applications for Windows, macOS, and Linux, providing a free and open alternative to Microsoft Office. Until now, the suite was only accessible through a web interface, similar to Microsoft 365, since the beginning of 2026. The first images of the desktop versions have been released, showing an interface designed to be familiar to users of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, aiming to make the transition from proprietary software easier.
Euro-Office is backed by a group of European technology companies, including Nextcloud, IONOS, Open-Xchange, Office.eu, and Tuta. Frank Karlitschek, founder of Nextcloud, emphasized that the suite offers a "sovereign" alternative to Microsoft Office, meaning it gives users more control over their data and operations. He noted that the software is available not only through a web browser but also directly on personal computers. Patrick Schaudel from IONOS highlighted the importance of having an alternative that can be integrated into daily professional workflows and is as user-friendly as existing tools.
One of the key features of Euro-Office is its ability to allow users to store data on European data centers, work locally on their computers, and even function offline. This reduces dependency on internet connections and web browsers, which is especially appealing to government agencies and public services. For example, the Dutch consortium SURF and the German state of Schleswig-Holstein have been involved in developing and adopting these open-source solutions, seeing them as a way to enhance data privacy and technological independence.
In addition to the upcoming desktop applications, Euro-Office recently received a summer update that improved its overall performance. The update includes faster filtering of data and more optimized display of document thumbnails, making the software more efficient and user-friendly. These enhancements aim to further solidify Euro-Office's position as a viable alternative to commercial office software.
