Sony unveils two new high-end portable audio players with premium components and high-resolution audio support, targeting audiophiles seeking top-tier sound quality on the go.
New high-end audio players launched
Sony has introduced two new premium portable audio players, the NW-WM1AM3 and NW-WM1ZM3, priced at 2500 € and 5000 € respectively. These models are part of Sony's renewed focus on high-end audiophile devices, following the release of the NW-WM1AM2 and NW-WM1ZM2 in 2022.Luxurious design and materials
The new models feature luxurious finishes, high-end components, and high-resolution audio playback capabilities. The NW-WM1AM3 uses an aluminum chassis with a copper back plated in gold, while the NW-WM1ZM3 features a deoxygenated copper chassis plated in gold and includes KIMBER KABLE wiring.Enhanced sound reproduction features
Both models incorporate gold soldering, copper-filled printed circuit components, and gold-plated screws, which Sony claims enhance sound reproduction. The devices include S-Master HX amplification, asymmetric 3.5 mm headphone outputs, and symmetric 4.4 mm headphone outputs.Revised power supply and output specifications
Sony has revised the power supply, including two large capacity capacitors to reduce noise from digital circuits. The European versions of the devices have a maximum output power of 1.1 mW at 32 Ohms, which Sony states is within the regulatory framework for hearing protection. The Japanese versions promise up to 250 mW per channel at 16 Ohms, which may be more suitable for powering demanding headphones.High-resolution audio and connectivity options
Both models support native DSD256 and PCM files up to 32 bits/384 kHz, as well as Sony's DSD remastering engine for upscaling PCM files into DSD streams. They run on Android 16 and include a wifi module for access to streaming platforms and web browsing. Bluetooth support allows the use of wireless headphones and earbuds, with supported codecs including SBC, AAC, LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and LC3.Storage, display, and battery life
The NW-WM1ZM3 has 256 GB of internal memory, compared to 128 GB for the NW-WM1AM3. Both models include a microSD card slot for additional storage. They also feature a 5.5" screen and a USB-C port for use as an external DAC with a computer. Sony claims an autonomy of up to 35 hours when playing MP3 files encoded at 128 Kbps and up to 31 hours when streaming.Release date and target audience
The new models will be available from November 15, 2026, with recommended retail prices of 2500 € and 5000 €. These devices target audiophiles seeking a compact, mobile source capable of decoding high-resolution streams and functioning with both wired headphones and wireless earbuds. However, the relatively low output power may limit their effectiveness with some demanding headphones.
