Passengers at Dubai International Airport (DXB) now have the option to be processed without needing to go through a fixed counter. The Dubai General Directorate of Identity and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) has introduced a service called Click and Travel, which allows border control agents to reach travelers directly in the airport terminals, whether they are departing or arriving.
This new system was created to make the check-in process more efficient during times of high traffic, long lines, or unexpected situations. According to the GDRFA, each check can be completed in about 12 to 15 seconds, significantly reducing wait times for travelers. Unlike traditional methods, where passengers must go to a fixed border control post, Click and Travel brings the check to the passenger.
The process involves portable devices that are securely connected to the GDRFA's systems and databases. When an agent activates the device, it reads the passenger’s electronic passport, retrieves the necessary information, and confirms the traveler’s identity using biometric data, such as facial recognition and fingerprints. This technology combines electronic passport reading, facial recognition, and an automatic check of the passenger’s data, providing instant and secure access to immigration databases.
It is important to note that the passport check is still performed by an agent, so the device is not a fully automatic gate. Instead, it functions as a mobile checkpoint that works alongside existing facilities. Click and Travel does not replace traditional check-in counters or the "smart gates" already in use at Dubai International Airport. Its use depends on the needs identified by airport authorities and the GDRFA, such as sudden increases in traffic or disruptions that require a quick response.
GDRFA agents can also prioritize certain travelers, such as families, children, and people with disabilities, when using the system to manage queues. According to the GDRFA, Click and Travel allows passport control officers to reach travelers efficiently and flexibly, ensuring that arrival and departure procedures are carried out safely, without being restricted to fixed service points.
