Espelido kindergarten in Mallemort undergoes a major renovation, expanding and reorganizing its spaces with sustainable materials and a focus on connectivity.
Kindergarten renovation in Mallemort
The city of Mallemort, located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, has completed the second phase of a major renovation project at the Espelido kindergarten. The project, managed by the Marseille-based architecture firm Atelier Maro, was completed in 2026 and covers a total area of 700 square meters, including 300 square meters of new construction.Project cost and timeline
Phase 1 of the renovation cost 236,903 euros before tax, while Phase 2, which was recently completed, had a much higher cost of 1.06 million euros before tax. The Espelido kindergarten was originally built in 1985 and underwent an expansion in 2005, resulting in a complex and fragmented layout over time.Challenges of the original design
The original structure featured a series of additions that created a disjointed environment with poor circulation, inconsistent lighting, and limited access to outdoor spaces. A central greenhouse and a large, minimally vegetated courtyard were key elements of the previous layout, but they contributed to a lack of cohesion and comfort for the children.Renovation goals and design
The renovation aimed to increase the kindergarten’s capacity while restoring a sense of unity and improving the quality of the children’s environment. Rather than adding a new building, the project focused on reorganizing the existing structures and their relationship with outdoor areas. A new classroom, dormitory, restrooms, and after-school space were created as part of this effort.Design features and materials
A central wooden-covered walkway serves as the main feature of the redesign, connecting classrooms to courtyards and creating a shared living space. The new expansion uses a wooden frame and truss structure, exposed in covered areas and after-school spaces, allowing for quick and efficient construction within the existing school. Thermal insulation made of wood fiber was used in the renovated sections, while wooden window frames, metal roofing, and earth-toned coatings contribute to a simple and cohesive aesthetic.
