Yemen's Taiz is now encircled by the Houthis, marking a major shift in the ongoing conflict as their advances threaten key regions.
Taiz Encircled by Houthis
The city of Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city, is now completely surrounded by the Houthis, who have taken control of its main supply routes. The city had already been largely cut off from government-held areas since October 6, placing it in a critical position between the Houthis in the northwest and the government in the south.Houthis' Long-Term Effort
The Houthis have attempted to capture Taiz for several years, besieging it from 2015 to 2024 without success. According to cartographic data from the Institute for the Study of War, analyzed by a journal, the group expanded its controlled territory around Taiz by more than 2,500 square kilometers between September 16 and October 12, indicating rapid progress.Government Counteroffensive Fails
Despite a counteroffensive by government forces with Saudi support, the Houthis continue to advance. Their progress may weaken the position of Aden along the Red Sea coast, particularly around Dhubab. Saudi Arabia's efforts appear insufficient to significantly damage the Houthi group, and the kingdom fears a prolonged and expensive conflict.Houthi Attacks on Riyadh
The Houthis attacked Riyadh's airport on October 10 and 11, causing at least 14 deaths and several hundred injuries. The first attack was the deadliest in Saudi Arabia in over a decade, raising concerns about the group's capabilities and the potential for further escalation.International Response to Houthi Threat
Several countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, and Turkey, have increased their military presence in Saudi Arabia or announced the dispatch of defensive equipment since September. The United States provides intelligence and targeting support to the Saudi military and has deployed an additional Patriot missile battery to bolster defenses.
