Former England and Tottenham footballer Andros Townsend narrowly avoided serious injury after being run over by a pitch roller during a football match in Thailand. The incident occurred at Pattani Province Stadium on Saturday while Townsend was warming up with his new team, PT Prachuap, ahead of their top-flight clash with Pattani. Townsend had recently joined Prachuap from Kanchanaburi Power and was preparing for his debut in the Thai Premier League. The 35-year-old, who earned 13 caps for England, was caught unaware as the slow-moving roller approached from the touchline, trapping his left leg between the machine and the turf. Teammates nearby appeared concerned, and the driver of the roller immediately jumped from his seat, with screams audible in the video footage of the incident. Despite the alarming moment, Townsend was able to get up and walk away unharmed. Remarkably, he went on to play in the match, coming on as a substitute in stoppage time and helping Prachuap secure a 3-0 victory. Townsend later took to Instagram to comment on the incident in a lighthearted manner, re-sharing a post with the caption, "Turns out Stoke away wasn't so bad after all [laughing emoji]." He also posted a video of the incident with the caption, "Just another day in Thai football [laughing emoji] (He was fine!)." Townsend will likely be extra cautious during Prachuap's next match against Chiangrai United, as the club climbed to the top of the Thai Premier League table following their win. Townsend explained his unexpected move to Thailand in a recent interview with talkSPORT, saying he had grown frustrated after being cut from a Turkish club and decided to take a chance on a new adventure. "I didn't care where I go, just take me somewhere nice, interesting and tropical," he said. His agent initially suggested European options, but Townsend felt a strong pull toward Thailand. Known for his time at Tottenham, where he made 93 appearances, Townsend has also played for clubs like Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Everton, and Luton Town. He has since moved to Turkey, playing for Antalyaspor in 2024. In addition to his playing career, Townsend has become a familiar face on television, working as a pundit and co-commentator for ITV Sport. He has covered major tournaments such as the 2022 World Cup, Euro 2024, and the 2026 World Cup. His transition from player to commentator has allowed him to remain active in the sport he loves, even as he continues to play professionally in Thailand.
