Ardie Savea will join the Blues for the 2027 Super Rugby season. The All Blacks captain has officially signed with the franchise, marking a new chapter in his career after 131 matches with the Hurricanes, a stint with the Kobe Steelers in Japan, and a period with Moana Pasifika. The departure of Moana Pasifika from the Super Rugby competition has altered Savea's plans, as he was originally set to return to the franchise in 2027 after a break in Japan. Savea stated in a press release from his future team that the Blues have always been in his heart. He also expressed a desire to unite a culturally diverse city through his arrival. Savea is familiar with Eden Park, noting that the stadium can become very noisy when the locals are involved. Savea's career path has some parallels with that of Beauden Barrett, who also played a significant part of his career with the Hurricanes before moving to the Blues. Barrett played 125 matches with the Hurricanes, winning the title in 2016, before joining the Blues in 2020. His first match with the Blues was against his former team. Barrett also had two stints in Japan with Suntory and Toyota before returning to Auckland. Savea has followed a similar route, with a stint in Japan with Kobe Steelers before returning to New Zealand. However, their playing styles differ significantly. Barrett was known for his ability to play at fly-half or full-back, while Savea brings explosiveness at contact, ball carrying, defensive activity, and the ability to play as a number 7 or number 8. Savea has played 112 tests with the All Blacks and scored 35 tries since his international debut in 2016. Savea's arrival is particularly significant as it is less than a year before the 2027 World Cup. He has been named captain by Dave Rennie for the 2026 season, although a shoulder dislocation suffered in early September against South Africa has interrupted his international season and requires surgery. His return timeline remains uncertain. Auckland will be able to reunite the two trajectories, as Barrett is contracted with the Blues until 2027, and Savea is expected to join the team later this year to prepare for the next campaign. Two former Hurricanes champions from 2016 could thus meet, eleven years later, under the same blue jersey. For Savea, who has had to move on from Moana Pasifika, this represents a prestigious new beginning.
