Published Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has spoken out about his frequent encounters with racism, saying he has experienced it "a thousand times" throughout his career. In an interview with Movistar, the 19-year-old player, who helped Spain win the World Cup in July, shared that he regularly faces racist comments and behavior, often from people who are not even aware they are being offensive. Yamal explained that many people make racist remarks or show discriminatory looks without realizing the impact of their actions. The Spanish Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia, a government agency, reported earlier this year that Yamal and Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr were the most frequent targets of online racist abuse in Spain during the final quarter of 2025. This comes amid growing concerns about racism in football, particularly in high-profile matches such as El Clasico, where Barcelona and Real Madrid face off. During a match at the Bernabeu in October 2024, Yamal was among the Barcelona players subjected to racist abuse from fans in the stadium. Despite the challenges, Yamal expressed a mature perspective on the issue. He said that being called "Black" does not bother him, as he identifies as Black and sees it as a natural part of his identity. However, he emphasized that the intent behind such comments matters. He noted that while he will not let disrespect affect his performance on the field, he is aware of the broader implications of racism and the need for greater awareness and change. Yamal's comments highlight the ongoing issue of racism in sports and society, even among those who may not intend to be offensive. His openness about the topic is seen as an important step in raising awareness and encouraging dialogue about racial discrimination in public spaces. As one of the most prominent young athletes in Spain, his voice carries weight in the ongoing conversation about equality and respect in football and beyond.
