LineageOS 24.0, based on Android 17, introduces browser-based WebUSB flashing tools and major app updates ahead of its 10th anniversary.
LineageOS releases version 24.0
LineageOS has officially unveiled version 24.0, based on Android 17, the latest version from Google, just three months before the project celebrates its tenth anniversary on December 24, 2026.New WebUSB flashing tools introduced
The most significant new feature for end users is the introduction of new WebUSB flashing tools based on a browser, available at flash.lineageos.org. These tools support the ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn, and Samsung Odin protocols.Installation process improved
These tools allow users to install LineageOS directly from a compatible web browser without having to download separate desktop utilities. Although traditional installation guides remain the primary supported method, the WebUSB option simplifies the process for users who prefer to avoid installing additional software.Core applications updated
Beyond the improvements made to the installation process, LineageOS 24 brings substantial updates to its entire suite of core applications, many of which now integrate the "Material Design 3 Expressive" style.New image editor and other features
Among the highlights are Canvas, a new image editor allowing cropping, white balance adjustment, and filter application; an updated Updater application with streaming downloads for faster installations on A/B devices; and twelve improvements to the music player, including better support for Jellyfin and resolving issues related to audio track unloading.Kernel policy changes
The project has also announced official changes to the kernel policy for LineageOS 24.0: devices running versions 4.4 and 4.9 of the Linux kernel will now only be accepted for submissions intended for LineageOS 22.2, as older kernels require numerous technical modifications that complicate porting to newer Android versions.Enhanced accessibility and security
In parallel, the project completed a full accessibility audit, conducted free of charge by the a11y project, which has already led to revisions of recovery mode navigation and the user interface, as well as training sessions for more than 40 contributors. Security patches covering the period from August 2025 to October 2026 have been integrated into all active branches (from 18.1 to 24.0), while the older branches 15.1, 16.0, and 17.1 will continue to receive patches.LineageOS’s growth and community
Since 2024, the scene of custom ROMs for Android devices has evolved, but at that time, 1.5 million devices were already capable of using LineageOS. This project has taken over the legacy of CyanogenMod, beginning its builds in 2016.LineageOS’s compatibility and impact
LineageOS, considered the largest community-based Android replacement distribution, is compatible with various Android brands such as Google, Fairphone, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, etc., and even with discontinued brands like Essential and LG.
