Meta is reportedly preparing to launch new smart glasses that do not include a camera, according to The Information. The company is aiming to attract new customers by addressing privacy concerns that have plagued its current models. These new glasses, named Luna, are expected to be available as early as October and may be introduced at Meta’s annual Connect developer conference, which takes place on September 23 and 24. The Luna glasses will come in two styles: Clubmaster and Burbank, both designed to look more like regular eyewear.
Unlike Meta’s existing smart glasses, which include a camera, the new Luna model will not have one. However, it will still include six microphones and speakers that are directed toward the user’s ears. This setup allows users to interact with Meta’s AI chatbot, known as Meta AI. A button on the side of the glasses will let users quickly activate the AI, but the glasses will have thinner temples, making them appear more like conventional glasses.
Meta’s current smart glasses have faced criticism over privacy concerns, with some critics referring to them as "pervert glasses" due to the potential for misuse. There have been worries that the devices could be used for stalking or secretly recording people. To address these concerns, Meta added LED lights that blink while the camera is recording. However, users were previously able to disable the lights, making it possible to record secretly. Meta later released updates to fix these issues, including closing a loophole that allowed users to cover the LED light after recording had begun.
Despite these improvements, Meta’s smart glasses have developed a poor reputation, which may be deterring some potential buyers. The company is hoping that the new Luna model, without a camera, will help rebuild trust and encourage hesitant customers to make the purchase.
