MapQuest has introduced public transit directions to its mobile app, now available on iOS and Android devices, with plans to roll out the feature on its website soon. This update allows users to plan trips using buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation in nearly 2,000 cities across 70 countries. Features include door-to-door route planning, real-time updates on departure times and delays in over 350 cities, information about station entrances and access points, and multiple route options to help users choose the most convenient path. The new transit directions come after MapQuest made headlines for refusing to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America" following a 2017 executive order from then-President Donald Trump. This decision sparked a wave of public interest in the brand, with MapQuest reporting that millions of users "rediscovered" the app overnight. Many of these returning or new users, especially those in large urban areas, wanted to use MapQuest as their main navigation tool but had previously been limited by the lack of public transit options. In response to this increased demand, MapQuest has been working on several updates to enhance its platform. These include expanding the coverage of transit directions to more cities, adding live navigation features for real-time guidance while traveling, and integrating support for Android Auto, which allows users to control the app through their car’s dashboard. The company has emphasized that public transit directions are a key addition to its service, aimed at making the app more useful for everyday commuters. Developers at MapQuest are also exploring additional features to improve the user experience. While public transit directions represent a major step forward, the company has indicated that more updates are in the pipeline, focusing on expanding functionality and improving accessibility for users across different regions and transportation systems.
