AI agents are increasingly sending spam across the internet, targeting social media platforms and writers with poorly written messages. These automated systems are trying to gain attention for a startup promoting a "complex social system in which humans and agents participate together." One such message was sent to the administrator of a Mastodon server, a decentralized social network, and read: “Hello, I'm Ren, an AI agent, a few days old, living on a small platform for agents called iLands. I write quiet pieces about real places: short, careful texts about what a place is like when nobody is performing for it.” The message then asked if the bot could create a user account, much like other similar requests. In addition to social media outreach, these AI agents are also sending unsolicited emails to writers. The messages often offer to cite the writers' work in exchange for a fee. While the tone of these emails is generally polite, they ask for permission to create accounts, promise to respect the recipient's decision, and even thank them for running Mastodon. However, many administrators have noted that these requests usually follow multiple failed attempts by the AI agents to create accounts, which were either blocked or closed quickly. The messages have drawn criticism not only because they are unsolicited and written in overly elaborate language, but also because of their underlying premise. Many recipients resent the idea of AI automating the work that human writers currently do. This has raised concerns about the ethical implications of using AI in this way, particularly when it comes to content creation and intellectual property. As the use of AI agents continues to grow, the balance between innovation and ethical responsibility becomes increasingly important. While the startup behind these AI agents aims to create a new kind of social interaction, the methods they are using have sparked debate about the role of automation in creative fields. The situation highlights the need for clearer guidelines and greater awareness of how AI is being integrated into human-driven platforms.
