Shortly after their release, the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 encountered a frustrating issue that affected user experience. Many owners reported that their watches would restart unexpectedly, whether they were actively using them or left idle, even during the night. The first complaints appeared on platforms like Reddit and Apple's support forums shortly after the watches became available. Some users described multiple restarts in a single day, even after performing a complete reset or exchanging their device for a new one. The prevailing theory among users and tech analysts was that the issue stemmed from a software or firmware bug. Evidence supporting this came from diagnostic logs shared online, which pointed to the Neural Engine — a part of the watch’s chip responsible for artificial intelligence tasks. According to AppleInsider, one log revealed a specific problem: a command sent to the Neural Engine was waiting 2020 milliseconds, just 20 milliseconds over the system’s 2000-millisecond limit. The Apple Watch includes a monitoring system called a watchdog, which ensures all components respond within set time limits. If a component exceeds these limits, the system assumes it has frozen and triggers a crash, known as a kernel panic, which leads to a restart. Apple did not publicly explain how the bug originated, but it acted quickly to address the issue with a software update. The update, watchOS 27.0.1, was released nine days after the initial release of watchOS 27, on September 14. It includes bug fixes, specifically addressing the unexpected restarts. The update is only available for the Series 12 and Ultra 4 models, while older models like the Series 9, 10, 11, and Ultra 2 or 3, as well as the SE 3, remain on watchOS 27.0. This suggests that the bug was exclusive to the newer generation of watches. To install the update, users can go to the Settings app on their Apple Watch, select General, and then choose Software Update. Alternatively, they can use the Watch app on their paired iPhone. During the update process, the Apple Watch must remain connected to a charger and have at least 50% battery power to ensure a smooth installation. This fix highlights Apple’s commitment to addressing issues promptly, even after a product launch.
