Nintendo announces Ocarina of Time remake

Nintendo has announced the release of a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch on November 5, 2026. The remake will be exclusive to the new console and has already sparked considerable excitement since its announcement in September.

Hands-on experience shared with media

During a hands-on session at Nintendo’s European headquarters, journalists and players experienced nearly two hours of gameplay, exploring locations such as Kokiri Forest, Hyrule Field, and the Forest Temple. This preview allowed participants to get a feel for the game's updated mechanics and environments.

Gameplay retains classic elements with modern upgrades

The remake preserves the core gameplay of the original 1998 Nintendo 64 title, including the Z-targeting system and dungeon progression. It also adds modern features like free camera control, manual jumping, and sprinting, which enhance exploration without changing the game’s fundamental structure.

Visual improvements and technical challenges noted

Visually, the remake features significantly enhanced graphics, with improved textures, lighting, and environments. The Forest Temple, for instance, was praised for its fog effects and color schemes. However, some technical issues like aliasing and clipping were observed in open areas like Hyrule Field.

New features enhance player experience

The remake introduces new quality-of-life features, such as summoning a Business Scrub to buy supplies in dungeons and a “Hyrule's Tapestry” feature to review progress. Some areas have been slightly redesigned, including the placement of the sword in Kokiri Forest and a redesigned dangerous hole in the Forest Temple.

Soundtrack and new content add depth

The soundtrack has been re-recorded with a symphonic orchestra, and cinematic sequences are fully dubbed in multiple languages. Players can use the Nintendo Switch 2’s microphone to play the ocarina by humming or using real instruments. A new location, the Hall of Fallen Heroes, allows players to face previously defeated monsters.

Praise and concerns about the remake

The remake has been praised for staying true to the original while modernizing the experience. While some players have raised concerns about the artistic direction and dated aspects, others have appreciated the nostalgia and charm of the original game. The remake is expected to attract both long-time fans and new players.
