A new theatrical season has kicked off in New York City, offering theatergoers a wide range of shows to choose from. The 2026–2027 Broadway and Off-Broadway season officially began in June, but only a few productions opened this summer. As a result, the coming months are filled with anticipation, as many highly anticipated shows are set to open in the fall. These include a mix of celebrity-starring plays and new musicals, promising a dynamic lineup for audiences. One of the most eagerly awaited shows is Broadway School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, which will open at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Previews start on September 8, with an official opening on September 28. The production stars Patina Miller, Denée Benton, and Jasmine Amy Rogers. Written by Jocelyn Bioh and directed by Whitney White, the comedy is set in 1986 Ghana, following a group of boarding school girls competing for the Miss Ghana title. It previously had a successful run Off-Broadway in 2017. Another highlight is Other Desert Cities, which will debut at the Hudson Theatre. With previews beginning September 29 and an official opening on October 18, this marks the first Broadway revival of Jon Robin Baitz’s Tony-winning family drama. The cast includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery, and Lily Rabe. The play explores themes of family, politics, and personal history through the lens of a family gathering. Off-Broadway, Pre-existing Condition will open at the Greenwich House Theater on September 14. Written by Marin Ireland, the play features a stellar cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Phillipa Soo, Edie Falco, and Susannah Flood. It centers on the emotional journey of dealing with a life-changing event, offering a powerful and intimate narrative. Meanwhile, new musicals and plays continue to enrich the city’s vibrant theater scene, ensuring a diverse and exciting lineup for the fall.
