The Copilot+ PC label, introduced in 2024 as a new category of Windows computers, is gradually being phased out by Microsoft and its partners. This label was meant to identify a new generation of AI-focused devices, which were expected to offer exclusive features like a dedicated Copilot key and a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second). However, after initial challenges, the label is no longer being used in product names or marketing materials.
The launch of Copilot+ PCs faced setbacks, primarily due to security concerns. Researchers identified vulnerabilities in the flagship feature, Recall, which was intended to enhance productivity by allowing users to search through their computer's history. These issues led Microsoft to delay the full release of Recall, leaving many Copilot+ devices without their primary AI-related feature. As a result, the brand struggled to gain traction in the market over the following two years.
In recent months, computer manufacturers have quietly removed the Copilot+ PC label from their product names and promotional content. Even Microsoft has stopped using the term in its regular communications. For example, the 2026 Surface line does not include the Copilot+ PC designation, unlike models released in 2025 or earlier. Instead, users now need to look at detailed specifications to determine if a device meets the AI-oriented standards previously associated with the Copilot+ label.
Microsoft and its partners, including Qualcomm and Nvidia, have acknowledged the shift away from the label. According to Brett Ostrum, vice president of the Surface division at Microsoft, the devices still meet the technical requirements of the Copilot+ standard, but the branding has been dropped. Qualcomm’s Kedar Kondap noted that the focus is now on delivering the same AI experiences without relying on the Copilot+ PC name. This move reflects a broader industry trend, as other manufacturers also avoid using the label, citing a lack of market adoption and the unclear connection between the devices and the Copilot assistant itself.
