Long-term study on happiness

Since 1939, Harvard University has been conducting a long-term study on happiness, initially involving 724 adolescents. The research followed participants throughout their lives, leading to conclusions about the role of personal relationships in overall well-being.

Importance of close relationships

The study emphasized the link between happiness and close relationships, including those with a spouse, family, friends, and social circles. Robert Waldinger, psychiatrist and director of the study, noted that personal relationships stimulate mood, while isolation can have the opposite effect.

Health benefits of relationships

Maintaining personal relationships is not just about social interaction—it is crucial for physical health. Waldinger stated that solitude can be as harmful as smoking or alcoholism, emphasizing the vital role of human connection in survival.

Health outcomes over time

The research found that people who were most satisfied with their relationships at age 50 were also in the best health at age 80. This highlights the long-term impact of fulfilling relationships on both mental and physical well-being.

Types of friendship identified

In an article published on The Atlantic, Arthur Brooks, a Harvard professor and happiness specialist, categorized three types of friendship based on Aristotle’s philosophy, each playing a role in human happiness.

Useful friendships

Useful friendships are typically work-related and transactional. While not always the most satisfying, they help individuals advance in their careers and daily lives, according to Brooks.

Friendships based on pleasure

Friendships based on pleasure are rooted in mutual admiration and enjoyment. These relationships may not be deeply emotional but provide a sense of fun and connection.

Perfect friendships

Perfect friendships, as defined by Aristotle, are those based on mutual love and shared values that elevate behavior to a higher moral standard. Brooks describes these as the most fulfilling type of friendship for long-term happiness.
