Despite ongoing economic challenges in the UK, new research suggests that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) remain optimistic and are continuing to invest in new technology. According to the Money Moves Report by Monzo Business, spending on software by these businesses has increased by 15% over the past year. The report surveyed 1,000 SMBs across the country and found that more than half (56%) are confident about their growth prospects in the next year, with nearly two-thirds (62%) planning or hoping to expand their teams.
While the outlook is positive, the report also highlights several challenges that SMBs face. Almost half (46%) of the businesses cited rising costs as a major barrier to growth, followed by economic uncertainty (33%) and the tax burden (26%). Managing financial administration was also identified as a significant issue, with UK SMBs spending an average of 53 minutes each working day on tasks like processing invoices and expenses.
The time spent on financial admin is taking its toll on business operations. Nearly half (49%) of the surveyed businesses said that financial tasks take too long, with 39% stating that it actively hinders their growth. Some businesses are even missing out on opportunities to invest in new technology, expand into new markets, or hire additional staff due to these time constraints. For instance, 21% said they are missing investment opportunities, 20% are missing new market opportunities, and 18% are delaying hiring.
The report suggests that simplifying financial administration could free up valuable time for SMBs. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of businesses believe that easier financial processes would allow them to focus on key areas such as strategy, sales, and customer relationships. If given more time, one in three (33%) would pursue new customers or markets, 31% would invest in equipment, technology, or premises, and 26% would consider hiring new staff. This highlights the potential benefits of streamlining financial tasks for SMBs looking to grow and adapt in a challenging economic environment.
