British tennis player Joe Salisbury has officially announced his retirement from professional tennis at the age of 34. A six-time Grand Slam doubles champion, Salisbury has claimed four men's doubles titles and two mixed doubles majors during his career. Most recently, he reached the semi-finals of the US Open men’s doubles last week alongside his long-time partner, Rajeev Ram. This decision comes just four months after he returned to the sport following a five-month break due to anxiety. Salisbury shared the news via an emotional post on Instagram, expressing both gratitude and reflection on his journey. In his message, Salisbury stated, "I’ve decided I’m retiring from professional tennis. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and am now very happy with the decision." He acknowledged the deep impact tennis has had on his life, describing it as a dream that has allowed him to travel the world and experience success beyond his expectations. He emphasized that he gave his all throughout his career and feels no regrets about the path he has taken. Salisbury’s journey began at the University of Memphis before he gained international recognition in 2018 when he reached the men’s doubles semi-finals at Wimbledon with Frederik Nielsen. Since then, his partnership with American player Rajeev Ram has been highly successful, leading them to win four Grand Slam titles: the 2020 Australian Open, and the US Open in 2021, 2022, and 2023. The pair also achieved the world No. 1 doubles ranking in 2022 and won the ATP Tour Finals in both 2022 and 2023. In addition to his men’s doubles success, Salisbury won two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, capturing the 2021 French Open and 2021 US Open with American player Desirae Krawczyk. He also represented Great Britain in the Davis Cup and competed in the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games. Reflecting on his career, Salisbury expressed deep appreciation for the people who supported him, including his family, teammates, coaches, and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). He concluded by saying he is excited about the future and confident that his experiences in tennis have made him a stronger and better person.
