Fourth-year students begin clinical training

Starting on November 2, 241 fourth-year students in the specialized studies diploma in general medicine will join medical practices, multidisciplinary health centers, and health centers across Occitanie. This first cohort aims to consolidate the clinical skills of future general practitioners while better meeting the needs of the population, as stated by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Occitanie in a press release.

Deployment in priority areas

More than 40% of these junior doctors will be deployed in priority areas affected by difficulties in accessing care. Specifically, 10 junior doctors will be deployed in Ariège, 16 in Aude, 14 in Aveyron, 35 in Gard, 10 in Gers, 58 in Haute-Garonne, 10 in Hautes-Pyrénées, 26 in Hérault, 6 in Lot, 6 in Lozère, 18 in Pyrénées-Orientales, 16 in Tarn, and 16 in Tarn-et-Garonne.

Training under supervision

During their fourth year, junior doctors will conduct consultations, ensure patient follow-up, and participate in the activities of the structures that host them. They will receive continuous pedagogical support from accredited physicians who are university supervisors, practicing in the framework of "supervised autonomy" to gradually complete their journey towards autonomous practice.

Scope of medical responsibilities

These future doctors will be able to take care of patients for common health problems, new symptoms, or unprogrammed care requests. They will also participate in the follow-up of people with chronic diseases, the elderly, and patients requiring regular medical monitoring. Their missions will include conducting medical reassessments, organizing additional examinations, and, if necessary, referring patients to other healthcare professionals.

Contributions to public health

They will also contribute to prevention, screening, and vaccination actions while working alongside medical teams to ensure the continuity of care. This experience is designed to prepare them for the full range of responsibilities expected of general practitioners in the region.
