Barcelona has signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth over 80 million euros (£69.3 million), while choosing not to exercise an option to buy Marcus Rashford from Manchester United. Rashford, 28, had been on loan at Barcelona during the previous season, making 49 appearances across all competitions and scoring 14 goals. The club had the chance to sign him permanently for £30.3 million (35 million euros) but decided against it. Instead, they turned their attention to Gordon, who has already made five appearances for Barcelona and provided four assists in La Liga victories over Elche, Rayo Vallecano, and Valencia. Sporting director Deco explained that the decision to sign Gordon was based on his playing style and how it aligns with Barcelona’s current needs. "We are extremely grateful to Rashford," Deco said. "He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony. His style fits with what the coach is looking for." Deco noted that the team struggled with energy last season, especially without Raphinha, and that Gordon brings the intensity and energy that manager Hansi Flick was seeking. Rashford has returned to Manchester United and is already involved in first-team duties, starting two of the club's three Premier League games this season. Meanwhile, Barcelona is still looking for Gordon to score his first goal, as he has yet to find the net in his early appearances. Deco also addressed the situation with Bernardo Silva, who was linked with a move to Barcelona from Manchester City but ultimately joined Real Madrid. "He wasn’t what we were looking for in the end," Deco said. "I love him. He’s one of the best in the world in his position. He wanted to come to Barca, but things didn’t move forward because we have certain parameters. It wasn’t just a financial issue, it was also about playing time."
