Martin Lewis, founder of the UK-based personal finance website MoneySavingExpert, has advised consumers on how to secure an extra £240 before Christmas by switching bank accounts. The method involves passing a credit check and using a bank’s seven-working-day switch service, which closes the old account and transfers balances, standing orders, and direct debits. To qualify, individuals must deposit a total of £1,500 into their new account within 60 days and fund an eight per cent regular savings account with £200. If completed correctly, the cash will be paid by 15 December, with the offer set to end no later than 7 October. This advice comes amid research from MoneySuperMarket, which found that the average cost of Christmas for a UK family is expected to reach £1,681—up over £100 from two years ago. The research also noted a 261 per cent year-on-year increase in Google searches for “how to afford Christmas,” highlighting the growing financial pressure on households. Gift giving accounts for around 15 per cent of the total Christmas cost, adding to the challenge for families trying to manage their budgets. Lewis also pointed out that toy sales have already begun at major retailers like Argos and Asda, with more stores expected to launch sales in the coming weeks. He recommended spreading out savings over September, October, and November to avoid depleting December savings, which are estimated to cover around £700 in income for many households. This approach can help reduce the financial strain during the busiest shopping period. In addition to these tips, the MoneySavingExpert team warned about the risks associated with gift cards and vouchers. These can become worthless if the store goes out of business or if the expiry dates are unclear, which can cause unexpected financial loss. Consumers are encouraged to be cautious and consider more traditional gift options that have lasting value.
