Xbox Labs shows old dashboards in browser

Microsoft’s new Xbox Labs division has demonstrated the ability to run the Xbox 360 dashboard in a web browser. The demonstration, shared by Asha Sharma, head of gaming at Microsoft, showed versions of the dashboard from 2005, 2008, and 2011 running in Microsoft Edge on a macOS device.

Demonstration uses web development tools

The browser address bar showed a local server address, "localhost:5173/play/FFFE07D1?dash=blades," suggesting the use of a web development server. The port number 5173 is commonly associated with Vite, a fast development server used in web projects.

Speculation about emulator use

Some observers believe Microsoft might be using an emulator to run the Xbox 360 software. The Fission engine, already used for emulating Xbox 360 games, could be involved. This would allow the dashboards to run without relying on original hardware.

Xbox Labs explores new software ideas

Xbox Labs was established to experiment with new software technologies, including running games on different hardware and creating browser-based applications. The project aligns with these goals, though its exact purpose and future are not yet clear.

Disc to Digital may be related

Microsoft’s Disc to Digital feature, which allows users to convert physical game discs into digital copies, may be connected to this project. However, the relationship between the two initiatives has not been officially confirmed.
