"NAZA," a critically acclaimed and polarizing documentary exploring the violence and human toll in Gaza, is set to begin its U.S. theatrical run on September 30. Unlike traditional distribution models, the film will not be sold to a major studio or independent distributor. Instead, it will be released through a unique, direct-to-theaters approach, starting with a premiere at the IFC Center in New York City. This method allows the filmmakers to maintain creative control and ensures that the film reaches audiences without the influence of commercial interests. The documentary, directed by Palestinian filmmaker Basel Al-Beltagi, has sparked significant debate since its debut at international film festivals. It focuses on the 2021 conflict between Israel and Hamas, with particular emphasis on the experiences of civilians caught in the crossfire. The film's title, "NAZA," refers to a common Arabic expression meaning "the people," highlighting the human aspect of the conflict. The Guardian, the British media organization, is playing a central role in the distribution plan, which aims to maximize the film's reach and impact. The rollout will include a limited number of screenings across the U.S., with plans to expand based on audience response and interest. This approach allows for a more flexible and responsive distribution strategy, adapting to the film's reception in real time. The decision to distribute "NAZA" independently comes amid growing interest in films that address global conflicts and human rights issues. By bypassing traditional distribution channels, the filmmakers hope to ensure that the film's message reaches a broad audience without being filtered or altered by commercial interests. The release is expected to contribute to ongoing discussions about the conflict in Gaza and the role of media in shaping public understanding of complex global issues.
