A British man was found dead near the remote Sicilian town of Canicattini Bagni, prompting local authorities to investigate the circumstances of his death. John Benjamin, 35, was discovered near a makeshift tent surrounding an abandoned farmhouse on Sunday morning. Local media reported that a goat's head, drug paraphernalia, and a rope were found near his naked body. Benjamin had been camping in the area for several days and had been trying to join a nomadic group living in the Sicilian mountains. Police are speaking to people from the camp after discovering neck injuries on the body. The death has interrupted the town's celebration of its patron saint and raised concerns among locals about the practices of hippie communities in the area, some of which are believed to engage in unconventional or esoteric rituals. Paolo Amenta, the mayor of Canicattini Bagni, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying the community is deeply affected. He urged caution and emphasized the need for authorities to conduct their investigation without interference. Amenta noted that the nomadic group, often described as seeking a freer, alternative lifestyle, usually stays in the area for ten days to a month, though some members stay longer. Benjamin's body has been taken to the Lentini hospital morgue for an autopsy, which is expected to determine the cause of death and clarify the nature of the injuries found on his body. A toxicology report will also be conducted. The UK's Foreign Office has confirmed it is supporting Benjamin's family and is in contact with local authorities to assist with the investigation.
