Stepanova seeks neutral athlete status

Russian cross-country skier Veronika Stepanova has decided to apply for the status of a neutral athlete with the International Ski Federation (FIS) in an effort to return to international competitions. She was an Olympic champion in the relay at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China but has been unable to compete internationally since Russian athletes were suspended following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

FIS shows willingness to negotiate

Stepanova said the FIS has shown a willingness to reach an agreement, which has significantly changed the conditions for the return of Russian cross-country skiers. She emphasized that this outcome was the result of complex work carried out discreetly by the Russian cross-country skiing leadership.

Stepanova ready to compromise

She now believes it is her turn to take a step toward compromise, as she does not violate any of the provisions of the current declaration. She stated that the ball is once again in the court of the International Federation, which she said must demonstrate its neutrality and impartiality, as well as its business sense.

Stepanova’s confidence in her role

She expressed confidence that international skiing needs her as much as she needs it, citing her notoriety in Russia, Norway, Sweden, and Finland as a major asset. She stated that she has worked for a long time and with determination to build this reputation, and that regardless of whether people like her or not, they will watch her compete on television.
