Two German men, one aged 53 and the other 80, died from drowning on Wednesday, September 2, at two different beaches in the Basque Country, according to local firefighters and the town hall of Anglet. The incidents occurred at Bidart and Anglet, both located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. These beaches had stopped their daily lifeguard monitoring service on August 31, although some other beaches in the region continue to have monitoring, even into October on weekends. At 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, a 53-year-old German tourist was found unresponsive on Pavillon-Royal Beach in Bidart. According to the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the man was pulled from the water by surfers in cardiac arrest. His two children, aged 19 and 15, were also present on the beach at the time. Later the same day, an 80-year-old German man was found on Corsaires Beach in Anglet. Lifeguards from two neighboring beaches, which still had monitoring in place, discovered him in "stage 4 of drowning," meaning he was in cardiac arrest and had already passed away. The town hall of Anglet confirmed the details on Thursday morning. While many beaches in the Basque region have suspended their lifeguard services during September, some continue to offer monitoring, particularly during weekends in October. This highlights the ongoing debate about beach safety and the balance between public access and risk management in popular tourist areas.
