Samsung has removed the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 from its software support page, indicating that these devices will no longer receive Android updates or security patches. Launched in 2021, both phones had received four major operating system updates and five years of security patches, aligning with Samsung’s usual support timeline. The Galaxy Z Fold 3, in particular, featured improvements like water resistance (IPX8), support for the S Pen stylus, and a 120 Hz external display, which were significant upgrades for foldable phones at the time. Samsung has since introduced newer models, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8, with the latter featuring a completely redesigned form factor. For users with a more limited budget, older models like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 remain viable options, as they are expected to receive updates until 2031. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 are currently receiving quarterly updates, as per Samsung’s standard support schedule for devices that are no longer new. Typically, new Samsung smartphones receive monthly updates, while older models transition to a quarterly update schedule as they near the end of their support life. Owners of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 now have about a year to consider upgrading, as the last security patches for the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 are also scheduled to end around the same time next year. This move underscores the ongoing cycle of technological advancement and the need for users to keep pace with newer models to ensure continued software support and security.
